The
prospect of the opening up of a transatlantic travel corridor appears further
away after the US State Department issued a “do not travel “ advisory for the
United Kingdom on Monday.
The
change came after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued
a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for the United Kingdom due
to Covid-19, indicating a very high incidence of the virus. Level
4 is the highest level of CDC’s alert system and indicates that travel to a
country should be avoided if at all possible.
The
British Virgin Islands, Fiji, Indonesia
and Zimbabwe were also upgraded to the same level.
The
change came as the number of cases of the delta variant of Covid in the UK exceeded more
than 50,000 per day on 16 and 17 July.
The
United States is on the UK’s amber list for arrivals, meaning that fully
vaccinated travellers can enter without self-isolation but with testing. However, travel from the UK and European Union to the US by non-citizens is still currently banned by Presidential Proclamation.
